I enjoy Kaity and Joshua playing together anytime but I love the imagination involved when they play in the van. Yesterday we were heading home and they were trying to decide how to play a word game. Kaity is a full blown reader and if you ask Joshua he is too. Yesterday they decided to play letter slide, you pick a word and then move a letter out and slide the others together to make a new word. Kaity picked first, "slide" was her word. then you take out then "l" and have "side". She had this sing songy beat to the whole thing that made it even more fun than mere words can convey. Joshua was on deck and ready to play so as soon as his sister was finished.
"GO, you take the 'guh' away and you slide it all together and all you have is 'oh' "
He was BEAMING that he had not only caught the concept but rocked out a totally awesome turn. I could see Kaity in the kid mirror (by far my favorite feature of my van, it's a mirror that is always trained on the back seat so I can look at the kids and we can have a conversation or I can give them THE LOOK w/o having to swerve and try to owl swivel my head) and her look was completely opposite of Joshua. He was proud and she had utter disdain on her face...with a little confusion. Maybe he hadn't understood how to play this game after all. I could see the destination of this game and it was not pretty.

Ohhhhhhhh......Ya know Joshy I love the way your brain works. That was a good one.
Whew, crisis averted! That was a close one. Then I realized my baby girl just spoke pig latin. Not a very impressive first foreign language but it surely marks a rite of passage.
"Oh and Ommay, anksthay" she smiles from the backseat.
I couldnt help smiling back, my baby is not so baby!

AAAaaaaaaand Sleep!
Bedtime routine at our house is rather lengthy. Not so much that we lose our minds but sometimes it hovers precariously close to the brink of insanity. Bedtime is announced every night at promptly 8 and the children respond with a shocked gasp every night at 8:01. They feel everyday that surely THIS shall be the day that bedtime simply does not come. In their defense weekends are a bit more lax and vacations well…..that’s a whole other story. After the announcement we commence getting on jammies and brushing teeth. We then have a vitamin race and see who can eat their vitamin the fastest. The kids get their beds made on them and sometimes if Joshua is in the mood he will read with Jeremy for a bit. Sometimes Jeremy will snuggle the babies on his lap and they will giggle together as he reads Calvin & Hobbes. I always sing Joshua 2 songs of his choice and Kaity will read 3-5 chapters of whatever book she’s currently devouring. All that back story brings me to tonight. Kaity was getting prayers and snuggled by Jeremy and she says to him in hushed tones “Mary is blind…can you believe it? “ Jeremy sounded genuinely concerned as he talked to her about it and then she said “ummm…from my book Daddy, the girl from my book” so he asked her what story she was reading and she told him all about “The Little House on the Prairie” series she’s reading. I love to hear her talk about her book people, she loves them and worries about them and they are real and I love that. She will ask to read another chapter if her people are in peril or if they are almost done with their adventure. I remember being that way with books when I was her age and it’s so cool to see it in my baby girl. Of course her Daddy then says “oh yeah, I remember seeing that episode.” Gee, thanks dadd-o! She is interested in seeing an episode or two though, she wonders if the people look the same as they do in her head.

I have strange children. I have known this for quite some time and really am not all that shocked considering, I mean look at their parents. Today Kaity and I spent the afternoon together and needed to stop and get groceries on our way home. We walked through the aisles and selected what we needed and suddenly I notice her walking with a little pep in her step. She is helping me pick things up and load them into the cart. Complimenting me on my selections. We walk towards the check out and she asks "Have I been good enough to get to check out?" That strange child had been extra good so she could scan the groceries at the self check out. She originally wanted to scan them, bag them, pay for them and then push the cart to the van. She settled for all but bagging. It took a few extra minutes but she felt so grown up. She even ran the cart back to front of the store and I drove up to pick her up. She climbed into her seat and sunk back into it with a sigh and said 'man, i rock being a grown up!"
To begin the blogging again.....or not.
That's not even the question. I love to write, love to talk, and the concept of a captive audience is quite enticing to me. The real question is will I keep it up? I have no clue but I've decided I'm going to jump in with both feet and see what happens
